Theatre Courses

Below are the theatre courses offered at Southport High School. These courses are taught by

Mr. Caleb Francis

Theatre Arts I

Prerequisite: None

Course Description: 

SEMESTER 1 “AN OVERVIEW OF THEATRE”

Students will learn all about the different types of roles we play in the theatre. Discover improvisation, acting, script analysis, lights, sound, costuming, makeup, directing, and playwriting!

 

SEMESTER 2 “ANALYSIS, DESIGN, AND DIRECTING”

Students take what was learned in semester 1 to the next level! We will focus on in-depth script analysis, design and directing along with important works of theatrical literature

Tech Theatre

Prerequisite: Theatre Arts I

Course Description:

SEMESTERS 1 & 2 “BUILDING AND DESIGNING”

Students in Technical Theatre will learn to further develop their understanding of theatre. Through an interactive, project-based curriculum, students will have an opportunity to work on theatre department productions, set-up and tear-down for school events, and develop designs in the areas of set, lighting, props, costume, sound and makeup.

Theatre Arts- Special Topics

(Competitive Theatre)

Prerequisite: Must have at least 2 years of theatre classes

Course Description:

SEMESTER 1 & 2 COMPETITION PREP

This course is designed for students with a passion for theatrical performance and a desire to compete at a high level. Students will develop their acting, singing, and dancing skills through rigorous training and practice. The course will focus on preparing students for competitive theatre festivals, auditions, and performances.

Theatre Arts II

Prerequisite: Theatre Arts I

Course Description:

SEMESTER 1 “ACTING AND WRITING”

Focus on acting and writing in this theatre class. Children’s theatre with the Homecroft 5th Grade classes is the main project. This class provides an opportunity to perform for an AUDIENCE of grade school students.

SEMESTER 2 “PRODUCING A PLAY”

Students fully produce a one-act play for the an AUDIENCE of their peers during the school day. The emphasis is on learning all about the many facets of putting on a play. Students in the class will act in or crew the play that is chosen.

Theatre Production

Prerequisite: Theatre Arts I & II

Course Description:

SEMESTER 1 “PLAYWRITING AND THE FALL MUSICAL"

Students in Theatre Production will learn to further develop their understanding of theatre. Through an interactive, project-based curriculum, students will have an opportunity to direct, act, write, and produce theatre and other theatrical events. Students will prepare for both the Student Directed One-Acts and the Fall Musical.

SEMESTER 2 “PLAYWRITING AND TEA WITH A PRINCESS"

Students in Theatre Production will learn to further develop their understanding of theatre. Through an interactive, project-based curriculum, students will have an opportunity to direct, act, write, and produce theatre and other theatrical events. Students will prepare for both the Spring Play and Student-Directed One-Acts. Semester 2 concludes with the production of Tea With a Princess.
