Applied Music Courses

Below are the applied music courses offered at Southport High School. These courses are taught by

Mr. John McBurney.

Piano/ Electronic Keyboard-

Beginning

Prerequisite: None

Course Description:

Students in beginning piano class learn how to read music and apply it to the piano, and are introduced to the 7 time periods of music history paired with instrument demonstrations. Students also learn music theory, and select music to perform in class recitals three times during the semester.

Applied Music- Guitar- Beginning

Prerequisite: None

Course Description:

Students in the beginning guitar class learn how to read music and play chords on the guitar. The class also has music theory and history components, three class recitals, and the opportunity to join and/or perform with the Southport High School Guitar Club.

Music Appreciation

Prerequisite: None

Course Description: 

Students in the music appreciation class will learn basic music reading and theory, which will be used for hands-on experience with recorder, guitar and piano. Students will learn about and research music history, composers, instruments, artists and musical styles, with the goal of gaining both knowledge and artistic discernment.

Piano/ Electronic Keyboard- Advanced

Prerequisite: Piano/ Electronic Keyboard or Private Lessons

Course Description:

Students in advanced piano class expand their playing skills and music theory knowledge, learn about the ancestry and anatomy of the piano, and select music to perform in class recitals three times during the semester.

Applied Music- Guitar- Advanced

Prerquisite: Guitar Beginning or Private Lessons That MUST Include Music Reading

Course Description:

Students in advanced guitar class expand their playing range and chord knowledge; learn about the ancestry, anatomy and basic maintenance of the guitar; perform in three class recitals, and may join the Southport High School Guitar Club for school concerts and events.
